Rice Story
Rice Story is nestled in Kallio, one of Helsinki’s most vibrant neighborhoods, known for its eclectic bars, restaurants, and urban gardens—a place beloved by young creatives and the artistic community.
Inspired by the district’s unique atmosphere, Yatofu draws from the cinematic aesthetics of Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki to craft a rice-focused restaurant that feels both intimate and full of character.
Staying true to Yatofu’s commitment to "local craftsmanship," the restaurant collaborates closely with Finland’s new generation of artisans, using natural pine and birch plywood to create a space that is warm and richly layered.
The furniture, crafted from pine sourced from northern Finland, retains the raw warmth of the material, balancing a relaxed yet contemporary design language that reflects the local identity.
The walls, clad in birch plywood, are cut in rhythmic compositions that introduce a subtle visual cadence, while hand-painted illustrations echo the surrounding streetscape, forging a deeper connection between the space and its urban context.
Yatofu employs a thoughtful design approach that immerses guests in a cinematic Nordic atmosphere. The warmth of wood, the fluid rhythm of materials, and the pulse of the neighborhood intertwine, making the restaurant not just a dining space, but an integral part of the community’s daily life and creative culture.
